Week of February 25-March 1

Spelling words:
Use, June, tune, flute, cute, mule, done, after, woke, nose

Challenging Spelling words:
amuse, clues, blue, parachute, prune, perfume, assume, creation

Please practice these and be ready for a test on Friday. Also, on Friday we plan to take a math test over place value, comparing numbers, and number patterns. To study for this, you may give your child a set of numbers up to the number 20 and ask them to put them in order from least to greatest or greatest to least. Also, we have talked about groups of ten and ones. For example, the number 18 has 1 group of tens and 8 extra ones. If your child is able to understand place value in first grade, it makes math much easier in future learning! Number patterns mean knowing what number comes next. For example, 2, 4, 6, what number comes next and how do you know? If your child needs manipulatives to help, you can always use a cereal to help do grouping.

In reading, we are working on inferring. Good readers infer. This means, good readers can use what the book says and use them as clues to tell them more. For example, if you went through my trash can and found a tootsie pop wrapper, you could infer I like suckers. So even though I didn't directly say, "I like suckers." you can use clues you find to help you infer. At home when you read, what can you infer about the characters?

Have a superb week and let me know if you ever need anything!
