FIRST GRADER TECHNOLOGY BLOG

This is where your child will respond to the blog in Technology. Please to not respond from home!

We have been working all month with Mrs. Sargent on butterflies. We have observed them, written about them, created stories, done raps about the life cycle, and actions. What has been your favorite part and why?

We are nearing the end of the school year. I have sent home forms for summer school for some students. These need to be returned ASAP please if there was one sent home. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact me either through email or phone. Also, we sent home a picture packet. The packet had 5 sheets of pictures included. You are not required to pay for the pictures but you must return all 5 sheets if you do not want to purchase them. Please talk to your students if they have not delivered these sheets to you! Is is very important to get all paperwork back in a timely manner! If you are choosing to not do Summer School there is a place on the bottom that you just state why and still return it to school. Also, book orders are due Friday!!

In math, we are working on our doubles facts! Please practice at home as much as possible. I would like your children to be fluent up to double 10s by the end of first grade. They also should be starting to identify doubles plus 1. A double fact is a number added to itself like 1+1 or 3+3. A doubles plus one fact looks like neighbors. 3+4 4+5 6+7 so they should know to add the double plus 1. They have been working a lot on these in class through games and movements. We are also working on measurement in math right now. They are measuring using craft sticks, paperclips, etc. and calling them units. If a book is ABOUT 3 craft sticks they can say it is 3 craft sticks long or 3 units long. This has been a fun unit in first grade!

In reading, we are approaching end of the year! We are trying to get all students to grade level books. There is a website I need to share with all parents!! Many of you ask about what books are appropriate for your child. If you go on the RAZ kids website, it has your child's reading level on it. If they are doing it in RAZ kids they can do it pretty independently. If you want to find books that are at that level, you can go to www.scholastic.com/bookwizard. This website helps you find just right books for your child. For example, your child wants to order a book from the book order. You are not sure if it is at their level or not. If your child wants Pete the Cat, type the title into the book wizard search. When the book shows, click on the picture of the book. Under the picture of the book it will show the grade level of interest, the Guided Reading level if its available (that is their RAZ kids letter), and their Lexile level. Check out this website!! It is worth your time! You can also use it to find a list of books at their level and books similar to a book they like. If your child is stuck on a certain book, find a similar book that may spark their interest! Make reading as fun as possible and to your child's interest to help make them lifelong readers!

In writing, we are working really hard at editing our own writing! Many times the students hurry to write and then have a ton of errors. It is now time for them to start noticing their errors on their own and begin to be editors.

If you ever have any questions or concerns please do not ever hesitate to contact me! I also have a secret to share....

I will be looping to second grade! I have told the students and will soon be sending something home! I would love to keep this exact class for second grade because they are an awesome bunch! I know with moving and relocating it just won't be possible but I hope to see many of you back in my class next year! If you read this blog please tell your child to tell me the secret words: Book Wizards for a prize.
