Valentine's Week

This week is crazy with Valentine's Day and assemblies. We had an assembly today about President's Day. See if your student knows and remembers why we don't have school on Monday! Tomorrow we will also have another assembly in the afternoon. Our Valentine's Day Party will be from 10:45-11:20 because our speaker is coming at the end of the day. For our party, we will just be opening our Valentine's, having a healthy snack, and maybe playing some musical chairs!

Also, this week there is no spelling words!!

In math, we will be starting adding within 20 now. We just finished shapes and ordinal positions (1st, 2nd, etc). Please practice at home knowing left and right as we have learned it in class and it should become automatic for them now! I do not send home the chapter tests we take at this time. I use them to show you at conferences. Also, this is the first year of the new math so their scores are not what you would be used to seeing. I do send home the review test though for you to see what we work on and do any last minute studying. Once we finish our chapter, I send home all the workbook pages that they have done for that chapter. If you need extra practice, there are unfinished sheets that do come home because we simply do not have time to do all of the sheets!

Please keep reading at home! Practice retelling stories including characters, setting, and beginning, middle, and end. Also, good readers ask and answer questions about a story that they have read. We have begun taking AR tests in our classroom. The rule is, the student must read the story 3 times (unless it is a long chapter book) before they take an AR test. If they do not do good on the AR test, I will delete it and they will need to read it again and try again. Once they accumulate 10 points, they will receive a prize. Most 1st grade books are only worth .5 points so it takes 20 tests to get those 10 points. If they miss any on the quiz, they do not get all of the points. It is important that your child is reading JUST RIGHT BOOKS. If the book is too hard they will not get their AR points. If the book is too easy, it is worth less points. If they cannot decode 5 words on the first page or 2, it is too hard. If they fly through the book, it is too easy.

MIDTERMS COME HOME ON FRIDAY! If you have any concerns, please contact me at any time. It is easiest for me to respond via email at sdavis@ccsd.k12.wy.us but you can also call me at the school ext. 219. I am amazed at how far our students have come but we still have a long way to go before second grade :) Keep up the hard work!!
